ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the ideas of risk and uncertainty from the perspective of the contemporary student in higher education. How has the profile of the “typical” college student changed? What kinds of risk and uncertainty in learning do students experience and, potentially value? The characteristics of “Generation Z” and the rise of the “new traditional” student are explored. Using evidence drawn from the scholarship of high-impact practices as well as the Purdue-Gallup “Deep 6” survey, the chapter details the kinds of uncertainty that students value in teaching and learning. The chapter concludes with a discussion and exploration of risk and uncertainty around the debate on “safe spaces” on college campuses and argues for a more nuanced approach to risk and safety where students can experience “brave” spaces.
