ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how teachers can intentionally incorporate risk and uncertainty into courses and lesson plans. The chapter begins with an example of an engineering lab where a small change in the order and organization of the lab to create more uncertainty for students made a large difference in the educational outcomes. Key elements in designing for uncertainty are explored along with specific tools and examples. How faculty can best work with students in facilitating productive and educational uncertainty is also discussed. Finally, common mistakes and traps in incorporating more risk and uncertainty in teaching are outlined using practical examples and case studies.
