ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a specific form of risking teaching: leaving the lectern and desks behind to take students out of the classroom. “Community-based learning,” “place-based learning,” “service learning,” and “study away,” are all recognized methodologies that take students out of the classroom and into the world at large and are briefly described. Obstacles and barriers to out of the classroom learning are outlined along with suggested ways to overcome them. Specific examples of out-of-classroom teaching are discussed using practical cases from a community-based research projects and a study away semester. Finally, effective teaching tools and methods are described to help the faculty member design and implement risk and uncertainty in community-based learning contexts.
