ABSTRACT

The interviews that informed this book were carried out over two years, followed by another year for coding and writing. During that time, a few participants changed positions, mostly increasing their hierarchical influence. Since the conclusion of the book, however, many participants had significant shifts, with some in their second or third position in three years. This reflects the tumultuous nature of educational leadership within districts, as leadership turnovers in urban schools remain extremely high. The bulk of the transitions echoed Jill’s reflection about her shift from a district to a state-level position: “I left one system of oppression, and landed in another.” What follows provides a quick update about participants’ current positions.
