ABSTRACT

Aquinas and Paley maintained that the intricacy and adaptedness of organisms can be explained only by viewing them as products of intelligent design, but they were not able to consider an alternative theory that Charles Darwin put on the table in 1859 when he published his book The Origin of Species. Creationists are present-day defenders of the design argument. Some of the most frequently repeated creationist arguments contain mistakes and confusions. Many of the main ideas that Darwin developed in The Origin of Species are still regarded by scientists as correct, but others have been refined or expanded. When people hear about the idea of evolution, there are two parts of the theory that sometimes strike them as puzzling. The version that says that God made organisms so that they are perfectly adapted to their environments makes predictions that do not accord with what the people observe.
