ABSTRACT

The idea that only a meaningful life is worth living is a powerful one. According to Nietzsche, humanity has traditionally found meaning by supernatural means that are no longer believable. If we are to avoid debilitating forms of moral and existential nihilism, we need to bring meaning down to earth. Much existentialist writing is concerned with these problems. If there is no grand ‘meaning of life’, then, to find life worth living, we must make sense of the idea that value and meaning in life are things that we can forge for ourselves.
