ABSTRACT

Sex and gender are amongst the most important determinants of our situation. We live within a social context in which whether one’s gender makes an enormous difference to the ways in which one will experience the world. Although biology has its role to play, the most important factors are social. The relation between genders is not symmetrical but rather inherently oppressive. De Beauvoir’s account of these matters and their relation to existentialist themes of freedom and bad faith continues to be enormously influential.
