ABSTRACT
This chapter covers the issues around ingesting chemicals, and routine warnings regarding alcohol use and psychotropics in the non-substance abusing patient. The chapter will also explore early detection of substance abuse, and employment of the CAGE assessment tool. It will cover polysubstance abuse, and evaluation of the intoxicated and withdrawing patient. The chapter will cover use of psychotropic medications in the treatment of dual diagnosis patients, substance disorders, and alcohol withdrawal. It will also cover interventions for the prescriber with a substance abusing patient, as well as routine warnings for other recreational drugs.
