ABSTRACT
This chapter will cover the basics of the initial prescriptive interview. It will cover: the mental status exam; suicide and homicide assessment; how to gather useful but optional information; how to identify target symptoms; assessment and formulation; and how to decide what the next decision should be. It will also discuss the length of an initial prescriptive interview, as well as diagnostic and medication bias.
