ABSTRACT

This chapter will examine alternative templates of development, mostly drawing upon case studies in Latin America which have attempted to introduce redistributive policies designed to address social needs rather than focusing exclusively on growth. In the 1980s and 1990s, a Pink Tide of soft and more radical leftist movements and governments took power in countries across the Americas offering alternative visions of development. This chapter will consider the rise of the Latin American left and its developmental achievements suggesting that international development actors should closely monitor a continent that remains in contestation with neoliberalism. It also considers some of the factors underpinning the more recent resurgence of the right in Latin America before reflecting on the influence of Latin America on the concept of de-growth.
