ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I focus on the method and how the act of engaging with and producing arts-based research has transformative qualities for both participants and researchers. After providing a brief contextual overview of photovoice, documentary photography and research poetry, I focus on the opportunities, challenges and impact of working with these arts-based research methods in aged care. In addition to describing the many unexpected practical, procedural and ethical challenge of these methods, and some disappointments, I will also reflect on the potential of ‘visuals’ for engaging, reaching and starting a dialogue with diverse audiences, and my experience of co-curating with residents a large exhibition.
