ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I focus on how the physical care environment enables (or not) resident’s quality of life in aged care. I consider the design of the facility including the residents’ private rooms, communal spaces, such as the lounge, library, dining room and food, and the exterior environment such as the setting and access to nature – visually illustrated in the photographs, from both residents and the documentary photographer. In each domain, we will also see how the mental attitude of the resident influences their experience of daily life and why reframing the contemporary experience of aged care is so critical.
