ABSTRACT

This chapter details the methods by which followers resist, and – sometimes – escape totalist systems. It includes a discussion of the “grey zone” between victim and perpetrator within these systems. I identify categories of response to living within a totalist situation, focusing particularly on personal and situational attributes that may help build resilience and the ability to resist. I also look at how the groups themselves come to an end, whether through events external or internal to the group. This chapter briefly considers the after-effects and recovery needs of former members.
