ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides critical information about basic democratic principles, but also—even primarily—by personalizing democracy, exploring students’ experiences in their own lives through thought-provoking questions, guiding concepts, self-quizzes, exciting games, and interactive exercises. It is written in language that is accessible to undergraduate and graduate educational levels in higher education, and at the same time refers to situations in students’ own personal lives. The book aims to contribute to the development of personal citizenship. This form of citizenship is more than just knowledge about the rights and duties in society. The book explores the connection between people's personal inner life and the relations they maintain with other people in society. It focuses on specific responsibilities: personal responsibility, social responsibility, collective responsibility, and ecological responsibility.
