ABSTRACT

An I-position is a part of a person that stands in relation to other persons in the social environment. There are I-positions in relation to the other people and other positions in our inner self. In a democracy, it is very important that there is room for opposition. This requires dialogue about our own values and considerations, and those of other people. In sharing opposing viewpoints, we come to know each other by paying attention to other views that may be different from ours. We can make better decisions when we consider alternative viewpoints that are offered by other people. For a good conversation, either with other people or between the different I-positions, a certain degree of flexibility is required. The conversation between multiple I-positions takes place from a meta-position. Emotion and reasoning function as two powerful I-positions and are brought in contact with each other.
