ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the fourth level of identity: Being part of the Earth. Ecological problems are continually imposed on us, and concerns about climate change are the most pressing. In recent public discussions on to what degree human behavior is responsible, more or less, for the causes of climate change, an increasing number of people are aware that the warming of the Earth will have enormous consequences for the future of the planet and thus for humanity. In a society in which people participate as citizens, there are four levels of inclusion that corresponds to four levels of responsibility: Individual, social, collective, and ecological responsibility. To develop a democratic self that can participate in wider society, we need to be able to move in a flexible way from one level to another, dependent on the situation in which we find ourselves.
