ABSTRACT

In our thought processes, we usually expect to start out with our reasoning capacities. We always see it formulated this way, but quite often the opposite is happening. Our emotions play a much larger role in our inner experiential life than we expect. This chapter explores the ways of dealing with possible conflicts between emotion and reason. Reason enables us to think in a logical way, to analyze things, and to compare them to each other and come to conclusions. It helps us to explore the origins of phenomena and provide rational explanations for them. We need our reasoning to investigate complex and problematic situations and consider pro’s and con’s on our way to finding solutions. An emotion is an affective state associated with a degree of pleasure or displeasure, such as an experience of happiness, anxiety, or sorrow. There are moments when reason and emotion are in nice harmony with each other.
