ABSTRACT
This chapter explains why air traffic management is essential in the aviation industry by exploring various roles in which air traffic control officers work and the ways in which they ensure safe separation of aircraft. Three key considerations in air navigation are discussed—communication, surveillance, and navigation—including the technologies, standards, and expectations involved in accomplishing each. The chapter concludes with a case study on the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines flight MH 370.
