ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how sport is an industry and how the business side of sport operates. To be effective, strategic communicators must understand how a business operates and how strategic communication is utilized to achieve organizational goals. It is critical that strategic communicators understand how their actions can add value to the sports organization. This chapter reviews critical elements for understanding the business side of sports organizations including sources of revenue, sport management, sport marking, and sport law. These critical elements shape how strategic communication can be used effectively in sports organizations—how strategic communication can help to achieve common sports organizational goals.
