ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 outlines the literature and central concerns and approaches adopted by the book, recognising that there has been little critical engagement with the topic of digital frontier technologies and crime in social sciences. This chapter flags some theoretical frameworks adopted in the book (such as ubiquitous surveillance, pre-emption, Actor-Network Theory, automated policing and justice), as well as a review of the literature in criminology, critical surveillance studies, science and technology studies, and other relevant social science and humanities disciplines. The chapter also examines key themes critical for the book, such as surveillance, big data, security, and privacy issues in the age of smart cities and the future Internet.
