ABSTRACT

Chapter 7 brings together the key concerns and arguments presented in the book. While we cannot know where technology is heading, we need to engage with critical innovations to mitigate—if not eliminate—some of its unwanted consequences. Their importance is so vital that we could no longer think about the future without positioning smart things and algorithms in the centre of our analysis. In the final chapter, the review of the current state of the affairs when it comes to digital frontier technologies and crime is presented, including automated justice, predictive policing and crime forecasting, concerns around privacy and surveillance, non-transparency of technology, their application in crime control and criminal justice system, and more. The chapter also offers a summary of theoretical engagement with the issues presented in the book, pathways for future engagement and research, and possible course of action for advocates and policymakers.
