ABSTRACT

This introduction sets out the approach taken to writing Housing for Hope and Wellbeing. It begins with a working definition of what is meant by hope and wellbeing - social value being the focus of this discussion - and moves on to Samuel's own personal experience of housing and her qualifications for writing this book, which is seen as a companion to many recent writings which reflect on the possibility of a post neoliberal world in which monetary value ceases to be the dominant force. Housing for Hope and Wellbeing offers an inclusive introduction to the housing delivery system written for a non-expert audience, its aim being to support people with the information they need to ask for better housing. The introduction finishes with a description of the structure of the book which is in three sections, the first providing context for the discussion, the second which focusses on the ways in which housing contributes to hope and wellbeing (social value) and the last which offers a vision of a housing system reconfigured to prioritise hope and wellbeing.
