ABSTRACT

This chapter encompasses some of the ways in which the home environment can impact on self actualisation and mental health. It begins with a discussion of world building, the way in which - particularly as children - the environment helps us make sense of our place in the world and the way in which home building can act as a form of therapy. This leads to a discussion of collections, taste and the way in which home design, decluttering and cleaning can contribute to a sense of self. It finishes by stressing the importance of enabling older people to keep transforming right to the very end.
