ABSTRACT

The previous chapter focussed on individual self development, while this chapter focusses on some of the ways in which homes and neighbourhoods contribute to identity and a sense of belonging at a more collective level. There is a growing body of evidence that shows what we already know at a viscerally, that homes and homelessness impact upon our sense of self. The chapter begins with a discussion of the land and the importance of building connections to our local environment into homes and neighbourhoods. This is followed by a reflection on the vital role that arts, culture and heritage play in helping to connect us to our places, to our pasts and to our futures.
