ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 argues that the use of identity narratives in applied theater practice can be a road map for assisting refugees when they are newly transplanted in their host community. In this chapter, the author introduces the reader to three female refugee youths from Syria. Each of the young women participated in workshops for young people that he hosted in Jordan during which participants focused on developing personal narratives. The chapter introduces the monologue as an excellent platform for empowering refugees and workshop participants in the exploration of how individual stories are experienced differently from the homogenized global discourse on refugee experience.
