ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the transformation of democracy from representative democracy to true democracy. It examines new technology will make it possible to participate continually in democratic processes without any need for the middlemen characteristic of representative democracy. The political and economic aspects of democracy have experienced difficult times in many countries throughout the history of capitalism, as capitalism as a social system is not a sufficient prerequisite for a democratic system. The effectiveness of political democracy has severe limitations, because it has little influence on the economic processes that are controlled by private actors. The definition of social justice depends on one’s political persuasion, that is, political left and right have different views on what they believe to be social justice. Freedom is a fundamental concept of any democratic society. The opportunity to participate in representative political elections, and the opportunity to participate in direct democracy, are only a necessary, not an adequate, criterion for the functioning of true democracy.
