ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how modern Islamic sources deal with the different narrative that emerged from early sources on the Jewish attachment to the Temple Mount. An examination of the sources reveals that most of them do not concern themselves with the traditional Muslim sources and, in fact, ignore them. Those who refer to the early sources explain the gap between early sources and the modern sources in several key ways: there was a Jewish Temple but it was small and unimportant, the Temple existed but elsewhere, the Jews themselves did not show allegiance and caring towards the Temple, the contemporary Jews are not descendants of the Jews of ancient times and more. Some sources even question the credibility of the ancient Muslim sources, including those considered canonical, which form the basis of the entire Muslim culture and religion. In this chapter, some outstanding modern Islamic sources are mentioned. These few exceptional sources acknowledge the existence of Jewish temples on the Jerusalem Temple Mount site, similar to the narrative of the early Muslim sources.
