ABSTRACT
The core philosophy underlying the Toyota Production System is the pursuit and elimination of the Seven Types of Waste (Transportation, Inventory, Motion, Waiting, Overproduction, Overprocessing, and Defects) in any and every aspect of the Toyota enterprise. One of the Appendices for this chapter presents all the ideas for reducing the total distance traveled by a single forging being produced in a custom forge shop. All of the ideas to reduce the total time to complete that forging, the total labor cost of moving that forging, etc. were obtained simply from visual analysis of the Spaghetti Diagram. The chapter introduces a software tool, Sgetti, which has the potential to make any and every manually drawn Spaghetti Diagram a thing of the past. The app can easily handle the complexity of mapping a large number of different routings and overcome the tedium of doing the same by hand.
