ABSTRACT
The arrival of European settlers at the end of the nineteenth century profoundly reshaped the course of Zimbabwe’s economic and political development. Over the course of the twentieth century Zimbabwe underwent radical economic, political and social changes. This chapter provides a comprehensive account of the rapid changes Zimbabwe underwent during the twentieth century and the impacts these had on the peoples and economies within the southern African nation. It provides the background to the chapter on labour relations and occupational structures that follows.
