ABSTRACT

This chapter examines trends in Zimbabwean labour data across the twentieth century. In doing so, it provides an analysis of the quality and sources of data used. It details how data was originally captured, the rationale behind collection and the problematic nature of both the sources used and the challenges faced in retaining a functioning archive sector by the economically challenged Zimbabwean state. Following the discussion surrounding our sources, we will examine population growth in the country over the twentieth century. Where possible, age breakdowns will be supplied, and employment figures will be provided to illustrate the economically active population. The changing nature of urbanisation rates will also be teased out as they were of importance for both economic and political development. Following the examination of population growth, the chapter looks in detail at occupational change and employment. It will highlight which industries were providing employment and how this changed over time. By doing so, it will illustrate the overall functioning of the economy. The main areas of the Zimbabwean economy (agriculture, manufacturing, mining and domestic service) are the focus of detailed subsections that provide a comprehensive account of labour issues across the twentieth century in Zimbabwe.
