The first part of this chapter examines the different types of political systems prevailing in the countries of the world and their implications for a country’s economic development and its business environment. The second part of the chapter focuses on the geopolitical environment of international business, explores the relationship between MNEs and their host and home governments, and analyzes various forms of political risks facing MNEs. The last part of the chapter takes a look at the differences in legal systems across countries and discusses a range of legal issues of interest to MNEs, including origin laws, competition laws, product liability laws and intellectual property laws.
