ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the publications that clearly defined biophilia in design terms, delineated design patterns, and articulated the outcomes, especially for health and wellness. Biophilic urbanism is informed by specific principles, which guide patterns of planning and the design. The principles emerge from the posits of the biophilic effect as applied to the urban context and can produce positive outcomes. The patterns are qualities and characteristics found within specific attributes embodying biophilic intentions. To better understand the principles, they are divided into five principle-pattern categories: nature-based patterns, element-based patterns, form-based patterns, place-based patterns, and numinous-based patterns. The biophilic pattern attributes in this work have been carefully generated from analysis of previously published works and personal experiences. As mentioned, the biophilic pattern attributes in this work have been synthesized from an analysis of the previously published patterns and the design guides.
