ABSTRACT

The telemetry unit at the hospital embraced the fact that they were going to be a training point for nurses and staff moving up their career paths and they embraced Training Within Industry (TWI) as a steady means of providing this service to the organization. In almost every Baptist hospital where TWI was implemented, one of the first applications of Job Instruction was in the collection of blood cultures and the elimination of blood culture contamination due to inconsistent or improper technique. The John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit MI had been implementing standard work procedures for several years under the guidance of Medical Center Director Dr Pamela J. Reeves. St. Joseph Health System, which merged in July of 2016 with Providence Health and Services to become Providence St. Joseph Health, introduced TWI in 2010 through their Lean organization that deploys experts in activities like continuous improvement, waste reduction, process flow, many of whom came with manufacturing backgrounds.
