Of course moral principles are not the same as laws, but if they are sufficiently similar, and if the people can explain the differences, they shall have a satisfactory ethical theory. Any such theory the author going to call by the name Prescriptivism, though this label is standardly applied rather more narrowly to the work of Professor Hare. In legal contexts, there may be perplexities or uncertainties which judges decide in the light of moral considerations. Often they will determine the severity or leniency of a sentence from a moral point of view. Before leaving the subject of customs, the people might do well to remember that customs comprise all aspects of life, or culture, and not just those aspects of life that they have been considering as legal or moral.
