ABSTRACT

The last chapter represents the first systematic study of Proclus’ treatise on the Chaldean Oracles, of which only five extracts remain. The reader is provided with the Greek text of the extracts followed by a translation and commentary. A short introduction has been provided to introduce the reader to the hermeneutical problems posed by these texts, which will be also dealt with in the commentary. In particular, the possible conclusion is reached that these texts are more notes taken from listeners of Proclus’ lectures on the Chaldean Oracles based on his treatise on the same subject than passages extracted from it, though it is of course possible that they reflect Proclus’ work to a large extent.
