ABSTRACT

A leader’s behavior speaks louder than his or her voice. It is contagious, can ignite passion, evoke trust, and inspire success and create meaningful work. Leaders must manage their behavior – it’s not a consequence of who they are – it’s an input to what they can be. Three vital components of leadership – integrity, courage, and intolerance – are essential for leadership. These require the leaders to be true themselves and to live by their values. The role of emotional intelligence – self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, compassion, and sociability – is also significant. As individuals progress in their careers the technical skills that made them stand out initially become less significant and are replaced by a need for critical, transformational leadership behaviors.
