ABSTRACT
This introduction sets the scene for the themes that will be developed throughout this book. It briefly situates social complexity as a scientific concept in archaeology and complex systems thinking as the framework best suited to study it. It then offers some considerations as to how and why complex systems thinking can and should be applied to archaeology on an epistemic, conceptual, and methodological level. The introduction concludes with an overview of the structure of the book.
