ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on various aspects of land use, urban, and environmental planning. Undergraduate and graduate planning programs have the option of seeking out accreditation from an organization called the Planning Accreditation Board. The book discusses a number of issues relating to the history of governing and planning of urban areas. It explores the multiplicity of zoning and land use regulation techniques that go far beyond the simple districting of early ordinances. The book discusses growth management devices used by local governments, and examines the responses of a number of states to population growth. It addresses transportation planning and policy and includes updates on transportation and infrastructure policy, ride sharing, parking, micromobility, planning for autonomous vehicles, the increasing use of delivery services, and the actions of the Obama and Trump administrations.
