ABSTRACT

Urbanization is a long-term process of people migrating from rural areas to urban areas. Although the rate of urbanization may vary by country, every country has gone through the process of urbanization. The reasons for urbanization are numerous. Many people move from rural areas and farms for job opportunities – the industrialization reason. The world has become increasingly urbanized over the years. The United Nations has consistently noted that the amount of the world’s urban population has increased and will continue to increase. The growth of the United States has long been characterized by movement: movement from the coastal settlements to the interior, from the North to the South, from the East to the Midwest and then to the Far West. In 1690, the urban population made up about a tenth of the total; a century later, the urban proportion had halved, with only twenty-four places being ‘urban’.
