ABSTRACT

“Dancing with contradiction” analyses how industry conventions and market expectations lie behind the perceived increase in ethical challenges for editors. Based on in-depth, open-ended conversations, I examine these changes and how practitioners are responding to them. I also draw on instances that I experienced in my own work as an editor of documentary television. The chapter contextualizes the professional ethics of picture editors practicing what ironically has been coined in the public discourse “the art of the invisible,” since commonly the goal of editors is to have their contributions remain unrecognized by audiences. Not being recognized, however, may also mean not being responsible for their work.
