ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces principles of effective instructional design, Gagné's Conditions of Learning Theory, and the ADDIE instructional design model to guide the reader through the process of designing compelling instruction in the music classroom. Descriptions of effective music class instruction, a Learner-Centerer Approach, Experiential Learning, Sequential Instruction, Differentiated Instruction, and Precepts of Classroom Management are illustrated in the design of instruction for the music classroom. The Learning Community as an Instructional Model is a fundamental feature of music teaching and learning. With productive positive leadership from the music teacher, members of the learning community feel a sense of loyalty and belonging in which student leadership, collaboration, and contribution are encouraged as essential attributes of the music learning community.
