ABSTRACT

The introduction establishes the premises on which the book is based, citing Sala’s description of a ‘Bohemian Republic’ in the mid-nineteenth century and the proclamations of Bohemias in Paris, London, New York, and Melbourne. Current scholarship is reviewed, and the contribution of this book is explained. The aims of the book are set out to chart the cross-Channel, trans-Atlantic, and trans-Pacific migrations of Bohemianism; to determine the mechanisms underpinning the development of an international Bohemian network; and to identify the distinctiveness of the various instances of Bohemianism.
