ABSTRACT

Stress wasn’t invented only for exam time. For some of us stress may have already arisen in our earlier lives, including our childhood lives outside of exams. It has been apparent for some time that children need help with stress management and The National Healthy Schools Programme has taken things forward. That venture was jointly funded by education and health departments in the drive to reduce health inequalities, promote social inclusion and raise educational standards. Keeping young people healthy includes looking after their ‘mental health’. This term seems to have drifted into everyday use, although some people may think it sounds a bit heavy. It simply means our sense of wellbeing, including the way we feel, think, perceive and make sense of our everyday lives. The term, mental health problems, covers a broad range of emotional and behavioural difficulties, including everyday problems such as stress.
