ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 focusses on coaching the beginner golfer. We describe how a CLA can be used when working with beginners of all ages and we will begin by describing how adopting a CLA with junior golfers can support their journey to elite status. Specifically, we will tell the story of how the fathers of Adam Scott and Tiger Woods underpinned their coaching by adopting many of the ideas of a CLA. We will then provide a brief overview of the key concepts captured in their journeys and describe how they align with key concepts when implementing a CLA with beginners. We will then move on to discussing the learning process for beginners, focusing on the first lesson in the context of the degrees of freedom problem, information collection, the role of instructions, and briefly the importance of practising on the course. We finish with an exemplar Case Study of a mature beginner, before summarising the ideas raised in this chapter by providing some key thoughts and recommendations.
