ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the development of the EdLab design team. The design team grew out of early efforts to organize the various art collections of the library and create digital versions for broader use. Influenced by the growing use of visual materials in academic work, the design team became a more central resource for the library and the EdLab. The design team embodied much of the DIY ethos that was growing in the student population generally and in more specific ways among the EdLab teams. As the library began to embrace the goal of transforming from a warehouse for materials to become a workplace for student and faculty creations, both the methods and the contributions of the design team took on added importance. The design team went through several stages of additional development by adopting a more educational emphasis, then adding capacity in digital design, and ultimately moving beyond graphics on the page or screen to include physical design work in three dimensions. This latter work played an important role in the continuing development of the learning environment of the library.
