ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the initiative to develop a focused and integrated conceptual framework for the work of the EdLab and the library. The framework designated the library search box as the target for improving the self-directed learning experience for library patrons and the motivation for all EdLab and library staff activities. The chapter includes a review of the evolution of the conceptual frameworks used to orient and organize the work of the EdLab since its founding. These frameworks moved the EdLab from the five original project areas to the three focal projects, to the three areas of work to foster learning, and finally to the five elements of the integrated focus: content, search, interface, promotion, and research. The focus framework spelled out these five key components that when combined could be elements of a comprehensive and dynamic system to support self-directed learning based at the library and extended by the work of the EdLab. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the tensions of operating an innovation unit with a larger established institution and the lessons that might be drawn regarding talent, time, and sponsorship for those interested in pursuing a DIY approach to innovation in established educational institutions.
