ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the further evolution of the DIY approach to innovation that took hold during the renovation of the library building and continued afterwards. This approach was used to create the library of the future, an innovative new approach to library operations and services. Drawing on various academic customs allowed for the development of a project orientation to the work of creating new dimensions of the library program, and this project orientation supported the rapid exploration, development, and assessment of activities that could then either be developed further or eliminated. But the project approach also highlighted the urgency of recruiting individuals with diverse talents and this, in turn, raised the need to have a more compelling story and image than just the library to attract people to the effort. It was this need that led to the creation of the educational laboratory or “EdLab” as the new identity for the library of the future. The first task working under the new identity was to establish the EdLab as an ideal workplace, a model for the future learning environment that we aspired to create for everyone, and the chapter concludes by describing this model.
