ABSTRACT
The ethical dimensions of four contrasting urban orientations are discussed. Initially urban scholarship focused on the emergence of globally competitive cities and this was followed by increased attention on issues of urban liveability. Two new orientations have emerged recently around urban fragility and the notion of the fight-back city.
