ABSTRACT

The economic effects are going to be very significant, but politicians are saying they are doing what is necessary to protect their citizens and manage their way through this crisis. The climate emergency is of a completely different order of magnitude. It is reliably estimated that the next year, 2020/21, is a fast-closing window in which humanity needs to take action to limit global warming and keep the world within livable temperatures. A number of other county councils are making a significant effort to decarbonise but their plans may only involve direct emissions by the council and not the total emissions of the county. A big part of the challenge is that as a society people have not committed sufficiently to reduce emissions. Organisations have a duty of care for their employees, including in the area of occupational health and safety. Workers in many occupations already experience climate and weather-related hazards in their jobs.
