ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the principles of fire initiation, classification and spread, and also describes the basic principles of fire prevention and the prevention of fire spread in buildings. It identifies the appropriate fire alarm systems and fire-fighting equipment for a simple workplace, and outlines the factors which should be considered when implementing a successful evacuation of a workplace in the event of a fire. The chapter provides a basic understanding of the legal requirements for fire prevention, and outlines the principles of fire risk assessment. The fire triangle consists of fuel, ignition source, and oxygen. Fire extinguishers are coloured red over 95 percent of surface. Fire training in the use of the equipment for all staff is essential. Emergency planning needs to consider the special requirements of people with physical or mental disabilities. The chapter lists out the requirements of temporary workplaces such as construction sites, temporary classrooms and buildings, exhibitions, festivals and fetes.
